Heritage Roofing and Conservation Works

Tyrrell Builders & Son Ltd undertook an extensive re-roofing and restoration project at All Saints Church in Barmer, Norfolk, combining traditional building techniques with high-quality materials to ensure the long-term protection of this historic building.
The works began with the careful removal of the existing stone copings, allowing new brick upstands to be constructed to accommodate the lead flashings and provide improved weather protection.

The copings were then carefully reset, incorporating a new string course detail around the tower to enhance the architectural character of the building while remaining sympathetic to its historic appearance.

The roof was subsequently re-slated, followed by the installation of new gutters, downpipes and associated drainage systems to improve rainwater management and protect the historic masonry from water damage.

This project demonstrates our experience in heritage roofing, traditional masonry and leadwork, bringing together specialist craftsmanship and conservation-led building practices to preserve historic churches for future generations.

SPAB (Society for the Protection of Anicient Buildings) working party at Shotesham ruins Norfolk. We were involved in training volunteers in the use of hot lime mixing and flint repairs. We also built a kiln out of clay and burnt our own chalk on site. Fantastic to be able to pass on knowledge of trational methods to future generations.

Heritage Building Conservation and Traditional Plastering

Tyrrell Builders & Son Ltd undertook specialist wall restoration works at a historic property in Norton Subcourse, Norfolk, using traditional materials and techniques sympathetic to the building’s original construction.

The works involved installing Savolit wood wool boards to provide a suitable background for the application of traditional chalk lime plaster, creating a breathable finish appropriate for the historic structure.

Where sections of the original wall required repair, clay lump was carefully used to patch and reinstate areas of defective masonry, maintaining the character and integrity of the existing construction.

The walls were then finished in traditional chalk lime plaster, providing a natural, breathable surface that allows moisture to move through the building fabric.
This project demonstrates our expertise in traditional lime plastering, clay lump repairs and the conservation of historic buildings, using appropriate materials and time-honoured techniques to preserve their character for years to come.

Historic Church Restoration and Conservation

Tyrrell Builders & Son Ltd undertook specialist masonry and lime render repairs at St John the Baptist Church in Trimmingham, North Norfolk, helping to preserve the character and condition of this historic building.

The masonry surrounding one of the church windows had deteriorated over time and required careful attention. Our team stripped back the defective render to expose the underlying structure, allowing the area to be assessed and prepared for repair.

The affected walls were then repaired using traditional lime render, providing a breathable and sympathetic finish in keeping with the building’s historic construction. Lime-based materials are particularly suited to older buildings, allowing moisture to evaporate naturally while helping to protect the underlying masonry.

This project highlights our experience in traditional lime plastering, masonry conservation and the sensitive restoration of historic churches throughout Norfolk. By combining traditional craftsmanship with appropriate conservation materials, we help protect these important buildings for future generations.

Tyrrell Builders & Son Ltd undertook a comprehensive programme of external restoration works to this beautiful property, combining traditional lime rendering techniques with improvements to the roofline and rainwater goods.

The existing external finishes were carefully stripped back to the original brickwork, allowing the walls to be prepared for the application of a new traditional lime render. This breathable finish is particularly suited to older properties, helping to manage moisture naturally while restoring the character and appearance of the building.

Alongside the rendering works, our team replaced and realigned the guttering to improve rainwater drainage and help protect the building from water damage. New fascia boards and bargeboards were also installed, providing a neat, durable finish to the roofline.

The completed works have refreshed the property’s external appearance while retaining its traditional character.
